The coolest thing happened yesterday while we were out doing more power shopping. We were taking a moment's respite from conspicuous consumption and contemplating the York River - which is beyond beautiful on a sunny day. Anyway - we finished our contemplation and began the trek up th bluff to the car (Yorktown is situated partly on a high bluff overlooking the York as well as a view to the Chesapeake Bay)and lo and behold there was a newly hatched baby snake - thoroughly confused and freezing there on the path. A baby snake. In December. That ain't right. I scooped him up and warmed him in my hands and he perked up a bit. He was so very sweet with his little snake smile - trying to climb up my sleeve. Jim was horrified of course - being the snake fearer that he is. But once he saw that I wasn't going to be eaten alive by the serpent, he warmed up to the little beastie. We searched for a warm spot where he could continue on his journey and perhaps find a little snakey place to live for the winter. We put him on a sunny slope near a house where he should be able to find a hidey hole and perhaps some tasty treats. I've not been able to get that out of my head since it happened. What an odd occurence. |
